If you read the study closely, you will see it suggests a new mechanism by which depression may be caused, but it never negates the serotonin activity - depression link. It just says that the root may not be the neurotransmitter (un)availability issue, but rather the lack of synapses or inability to create new ones for it to act. In which case SSRIs would be obviously useless.
The model big farma promotes its just a bad patch looking for profits, worsening the condition in lots of cases, and with detrimental side effects in others. But aside of this, serotonin activity/imbalance -as well other neurotransmitters- does play a rol for sure in depression, both if too high or too low. Determining when it happens and how to fix is the big question.
