Though all the experiments were conducted in mice, the findings apply to humans, according to Dr. Karsenty, since this work was prompted by the elucidation of the two human genetic bone diseases. Indeed, Dr. Karsenty’s group verified that circulating serotonin levels were abnormal in human patients with both diseases.

Yes, serotonin is a powerful destroyer of bone. Inhibiting gut serotonin synthesis may reverse osteoporosis. I posted a study on 5-HT3 blockade restoring bone density of old animals to youthful levels. The study probably used ondansetron, but any other of the -setrons should be able to do the same. There is also a study on caffeine having similar effects. Finally, all the dopaminergic drugs for Parkinson have that bone building quality as a desirable side-effect.
