I asked Dr. Peat about the effect of masturbation on prolactin (I am not quoting my question because it was a personal question)

Dr. Peat's answer: "I don't think masturbation affects the hormones more than regular sex does."

good question and thanks for share,

that surprised me to hear that from dr peat, because i think a difference between sex and masturbation is that during proccess if of sex you release a lot of dopamine, which itself effects your body and also effect your prolactin level.

that surprised me too because I have seen many people here say prolactin stays elevated for longer period after masturbation compared to sex. That's why I shared this response to see what you guys think. Maybe masturbation is different from porn+masturbation?

maybe it depends on quality of sex or masturbation, some men may last very short on either sex or masturbation, and enjoy less so less dopamine.but some men may really enjoy a long act of masturbation ,more dopamine.

but simply it cant be said they are equal.anyway sex in general is more enjoyable act.flirting , foreplay,.....

I think RP meant to say whatever the hormonal changes are those return to normal
level without causing any significant problem. He was asked about prolactin rise
after sex and he thought it was not a problem.

I think studies show higher level of prolactin release after intercourse than masturbation.
Here is a study.
The post-orgasmic prolactin increase following intercourse is greater than following masturbation and suggests greater satiety.
Brody S1, Krüger TH.
Author information

Abstract
Research indicates that prolactin increases following orgasm are involved in a feedback loop that serves to decrease arousal through inhibitory central dopaminergic and probably peripheral processes. The magnitude of post-orgasmic prolactin increase is thus a neurohormonal index of sexual satiety. Using data from three studies of men and women engaging in masturbation or penile-vaginal intercourse to orgasm in the laboratory, we report that for both sexes (adjusted for prolactin changes in a non-sexual control condition), the magnitude of prolactin increase following intercourse is 400% greater than that following masturbation. The results are interpreted as an indication of intercourse being more physiologically satisfying than masturbation, and discussed in light of prior research reporting greater physiological and psychological benefits associated with coitus than with any other sexual activities.

Yeah sex is more enjoyable but sometimes masturbation is more practical you know :)

Oh thanks for posting this. Maybe that means sex/masturbation shouldn't be very frequent to control prolactin a little bit. I think the problem with porn and masturbation is that it's so easy and available to do that some people indulge in it so often that it affects other aspects of their lives.

Do studies say prolactin stays elevated after orgasm or just a spike? Many hormones are useful in the short term and harmful when constantly elevated, so when I read that prolactin shoots up after sex I don't think it means anything. I would need to see studies about how long it stays up before finding it interesting.
