Hi everybody,

I am new to all things Ray Peat. I'll be seeing my doctor soon for a routine physical and I'm wondering which labs I should be sure to get.

I am a 52-year-old male and have been suffering symptoms of andropause since my early 30s. I also have problems with benign prostatic hyperplasia.

I also know that my thyroid is functioning far from optimally and even experimented with taking Armour Thyroid a few years ago.

Thanks in advance,

Mike

Prolactin, cortisol, cholesterol, vitamin D, TSH, phosphate, parathyroid hormone (PTH) are the standard.

Liver enzymes can be useful.

A full hormonal panel is merited in your case. Estrogens, test, DHEA, etc.

RP recommends following tests for hypothyrodism

"
Blood tests for cholesterol, albumin, glucose, sodium, lactate, total thyroxine and total T3 are useful to know, because they help to evaluate the present thyroid status, and sometimes they can suggest ways to correct the problem.

Less common blood or urine tests (adrenaline, cortisol, ammonium, free fatty acids), if they are available, can help to understand compensatory reactions to hypothyroidism."- Ray Peat

Free Ftty acids Tests are also called non‐esterified fatty acids

At 52 there is a possibility of iron overload. You can
add Hemoglobin, RBC, Serum Ferritin and Transferrin
Saturation to get an idea about total iron storage.

Other useful tests are
Serum CO2
Calcium Phosphate PTH
Reverse T3
CRP
Serotonin

For prostate
In prostate problems Active thyroid hormone T3, Pregnolone,
Preogesterone, testesterone, DHT are low and estradiol and
DHEA are high.

Pregnenolone
Testesterone
DHT
Estrogen (Estradiol)
DHEA

Edit: If i go for minimum amount of tests then TSH, Total T4, Total T3
Reverse T3, Total cholesterol, Prolactin, PTH would be fine.

In the prostate problems (like BPH), i thought DHT was high, isn't that why fin/dut works ? ( not to be confused with prostate cancer where DHT has shown therapeutic effects).

This.

Together with your symptoms and temp&pulse will be more than enough for a starting point.

I was going by RP's article on Prostate cancer, since both prostate
breast cancer problems are result of hypothyroidism, high estrogen,
High PUFA . DHEA increases in the absence of thyroid and other
protective hormones. It does not mean DHEA is bad for us.
Similar thing can happen with DHT.
