Raging Arousal Middle Of Night

This is a really personal issue I'm having but my doctor, as usual, has no suggestions.

I'm 33/male. For the past two months, I wake up in the middle of the night raging horny. It's always around 2-3am. I have a full erection and it's not just standard arousal, it is urgent and adrenaline filled. The urge almost feels "electric", if that makes sense. I am always semi-conscious when it happens which means I feel like I'm less in control of my response. I don't have a partner, otherwise I'd just have sex. Instead I just masturbate. If I don't ejaculate then I just lay there in a hyper-aroused state for hours.

It sounds fun and sexy but it's actually not because I end up exhausted the next morning because not only is my sleep disturbed but my body gets filled with prolactin. This happens at least 3 times a week. During the daytime my sex drive and libido are pretty normal. This night time issue is not because of dreams I'm having. I also don't watch porn in my life. It feels hormonal or something. Perhaps it's cortisol related? Although, my daily stress levels are not very high. I lift weights twice a week and my nutritional life is very complete these days.

Does anyone have any idea why this would be happening in the middle of the night? I have had this happen periodically throughout my life here and there, but never for months on end like this. It's disrupting my sleep to the point that my day to day function is being affected.

Any labs?
Would check for T, DHT, prolactin, at least.
What are you usually eating? Temps and pulse logs?

My hormone labs were done two months ago. T is above normal by a couple points. Didn't get DHT done because I don't have $200 to drop on a test.

Temperature is for sure elevated especially at that hour, pulse is 65 at rest. I'm assuming prolactin is high after I ejaculate because I get a day's break from this problem. Then 48 hours later when the prolactin presumably wears off, I have another night time episode.

Diet is comprehensive and covers all micro and macro nutrients. Is there something specific you want to ask about my diet, rather than me listing everything? Are there certain foods that could cause this?

I'm betting if you slept with a light on, at least shining on your legs or something, it would prevent this.

I deal with the same issue. Sex drive is legitimately painfully high some nights. Rampant is the word in the middle of the night. Truly don’t understand it. I would get it if it was at 7 AM opposed to 1 AM. Wonder if adrenals are involved or much needed REM sleep is so healing to a damaged metabolism that sex drive responds immediately.

What's the logic behind this?

It could be adrenal though in what way are you thinking?

Catholic monks found the best way to lower their libido was through the adoption of a vegan diet.

A hypothesis of mine, since part of melatonin's job, aside from acting as an anti-oxidant, also handling serotonin, I think when controlled by good thyroid function does allow for restfulness by directly keeping prolactin and serotonin at bay, especially at night. Because of the melatonin system going awry based on bad thyroid and/or too much blue light exposure, if prolactin goes unopposed it can create this manic sexual surge. Using some light while you sleep, and making sure blood sugar is good, I feel will keep the prolactin at bay. You should experiment with light, see what happens.

If you think it's cortisol/adrenaline related, you may try eating something sweet and/or salty right before bed. Aspirin might also help this. That helps a lot of people sleep thru the night.

You could drink some orange juice or another sugary drink at the time you wake up to help get back to sleep. When I wake up in the middle of the night with an adrenaline issue (I can tell because my heart is usually pounding), orange juice would help settle me down and go back to sleep quick. I don't wake up "aroused," but still might apply. It was usually a night of drinking that would bring on this response.

You might also try sleeping inclined. That also seemed to reduce the nighttime "adrenaline spikes" for me. Here is the IBT thread- Inclined Bed Therapy - Sleeping With The Head End Of The Bed Elevated

You know, looking back, this problem always happens in the winter when daylight is low. I live in the pacific Northwest.

Sometimes I have a teaspoon of honey before bed, for this exact reason. Good idea, I will think about it :)

I have a feeling though it may be a prolactin issue like mentioned above. It's just too acute to be non-hormonal.

I think vegan diets dampen healthy libidos. In his case, a vegan diet could possibly make it worse.

I was vegetarian for 8 years and it nearly destroyed me. No way on earth will I ever abstain from meat again.

I think you are pathologising something that is completely normal. Men have a series of erections throughout the night and the normal waking up erection is the last in that series.

Just because you are waking up every few nights with one is more likely to be related to sleep and or mental health issues which often produce insomnia and waking, especially at that 2-3am mark. Ask yourself when you wake up at that time “what is troubling me?”.

If you are completely happy with your life, then perhaps think about dealing with the need for sexual release before going to sleep, so that it doesn’t awaken you later.

All I’m trying to say is you are in the prime of your life. It’s normal for you to get a boner, and normal for you to want sexual gratification.

I don’t think being aroused from your sleep due to uncontrollable sexual urges is exactly normal nor healthy, especially since he’s stated it’s impacted his sleep quality.

Getting boners in your sleep is healthy. Strong sexual urges which impede sleep is not.

As a temporary solution, OP you could try sexually releasing before bed, maybe that would curtail any sexual urge in the middle of night, at least allowing you to get some quality sleep.

Damn, I have had something quite similar...the thing about not being in control of it and feeling like in a dreamy state is wierd.

My suspect is something in the diet and have just started to note the foods I eat when this happens. So far either coke, coffee or milk seem to be likely although not sure.

It will be good to see what your diet is like.
