Often I see a head lines like: Scientists have 'linked' consumption of X to a chance of developing disease Y.

Can someone explain what the term 'linked' means. Is it another word for correlation?

I think it could mean different things - correlation, association, causation, relationship, etc. It is kind of a loose word. It's like there is a link in a chain connecting two things - they are linked somehow - actually i think it tends to imply some kind of relationship there, not just correlation.
