That's a very good reason to keep gut bacteria as low as possible, while keeping the "right kind" high. It seems that a bit of lactic acid in the gut is necessary to reduce bacterial pathogens by acidifying the intestines. Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium species also lower the expressions of TLRs, thus reducing the inflammation that can be caused by endotoxins.

Maybe it's only necessary when gastric acid output is low ? Serotonin and hypothyroidism have been shown to inhibit gastric acid output. Also in Traditional Chinese Medicine there is the notion of dampness and damp-forming foods/habits (Dairy, Sugar excess, Wheat, Bananas, Fatty Foods, Alcohol, drinking too much water with a meal, overeating and too much animal protein) which weaken the digestive fire and allow pathogenic growth. Seems like the western equivalent is the lack of gut acidity and foods that resist to acidity or dilute it. While there are damp-removing foods like white rice, ginger, jasmine green tea, vinegar or increasing body heat; which on the western side have water-absorbing properties, ameliorate digestion or increase acidity. Simply avoiding the damp-forming foods/habits has achieved good results for me, not only in terms of digestion but also general health and well-being.

You're possibly right. This study (1) shows that: "lactic acid was more active than EDTA or HCl in liberating lipopolysaccharide from the outer membrane. Thus, lactic acid, in addition to its antimicrobial property due to the lowering of the pH, also functions as a permeabilizer of the gram-negative bacterial outer membrane and may act as a potentiator of the effects of other antimicrobial substances."
So it's anti-microbial, but it's more effective at creating endotoxins than stomach acid? And it's more effective at keeping gut bacteria low compared to stomach acid.
Interestingly: "The permeabilization by lactic and hydrochloric acid was partly abolished by MgCl2."
