Link to sci-hub full study: Potentially repurposable drugs for schizophrenia identified from its interactome

"In summary, clinical trial data, network-based analyses and literature review support the biological validity of 9 out of the 12 drugs proposed to be repurposable for schizophrenia, namely, acetazolamide, alfacalcidol, amiloride, antazoline, cinnarizine, cromoglicic acid, danazol, miconazole and tetracycline."

"Cromoglicic acid

Cromoglicic acid is being tested in clinical trials for its efficacy in Alzheimer’s disease. It has been reported that cromoglicic acid in combination with ibuprofen reduces the levels of amyloid-beta protein levels, a pathological biomarker in Alzheimer’s disease, and promotes a neuroprotective state by activating microglia and inducing phagocytosis of amyloid-beta proteins 59. Based on this work, cromoglicic acid has been considered for further study by our clinical collaborators and is currently in clinical trials (ClinicalTrials.gov Identifier: NCT03794076)."

Cromoglicic acid, also known as cromolyn sodium or Nasalcrom, a "mast cell blocker."

I am very curious about why it works! The onset of action is not 2-3 weeks like some say, it is almost immediate, especially if administered in an enema (personal observation).

Cromolyn sodium is from a family of "anti-allergic" compounds called cromones. It is effective in "non-allergic settings" as well.

It is compared to ketotifen, a Peat antihistamine recommendation.

"When tested, ketotifen was found to have the same effect on the Anx-A1 system as nedocromil and cromoglycate suggesting a commonality of mechanisms of action (Sinniah et al., 2016). An important speculation is that all H1 antagonists with this additional action may have a secondary pharmacology as PP2A inhibitors and, if so, this could be a beneficial therapeutic screen to evaluate this property."
