although about 6 years into menopause I still get hot flushes, but breast tenderness had been a thing of the past.My flushes are worse and now the breast tenderness. I had some years ago cut out caffeine as much as I could from my diet and now of course its back in. Has anyone else had this affect and am i blaiming the caffeine unfairly. Ive also upped my salt a bit. I'm raging hot at night and this is affecting my sleep badly.I had overcome this so I am a little concerned. Any comments please ?

I am 13 yrs post menopausal. I was having hot flashes in the middle of the night. I attributed it to stress hormones. I also had very bad insomnia. I started taking Benadryl to help with sleep. I stopped having the hot flashes in the night. It is very hard to pinpoint what stopped them since I have been following a better diet and supplementing different things. I have been taking Progest-e for quite some time now. I also have had some breast tenderness. Not now, though. I really didn't think much of it at the time.

This quote from Peatarian comes to mind.

"There is a circle of histamin, estrogen, melatonin and the other stress hormones which can be stopped using antihistamines"

If caffeine is worsening a condition then there is no reason to continue it.
Anything that makes thing worse can not be a good thing for you.
It is your health and you have to trust your own experience.
Same goes for salt. RP recommendations are about good nutritions
like adequate protein, good balance of calcium and phosphorus, high intake
of alkaline minerals, seafood, livers and regular required vitamins and minerals.
The most important part of his recommendation is to avoid toxic
PUFA,only if you are convinced PUFA is bad for you.
Coffee has lots of health benefits but it is not essential.
He thinks milk is a very good food, but it is a bad food for someone
who can not digest it properly.

My sister used to get cysts in her breasts years ago and was told by her gyn dr. to avoid caffeine. I sent her quotes from Ray Peat's article on caffeine and she is now enjoying her caffeine daily. Here is an excerpt from the article-

http://raypeat.com/articles/articles/caffeine.shtml

"One of the most popular misconceptions about caffeine is that it causes fibrocystic breast disease. Several groups demonstrated pretty clearly that it doesn’t, but there was no reason that they should have had to bother, except for an amazingly incompetent, but highly publicized, series of articles--classics of their kind--by J. P. Minton, of Ohio State University. Minton neglected to notice that the healthy breast contains a high percentage of fat, and that the inflamed and diseased breast has an increased proportion of glandular material Fat cells have a low level of cyclic AMP, a regulatory substance that is associated with normal cellular differentiation and function, and is involved in mediating caffeine’s ability to inhibit cancer cell multiplication. Minton argued that cAMP increases progressively with the degree of breast disease, up to cancer, and that cAMP is increased by caffeine. A variety of substances other than caffeine that inhibit the growth of cancer cells (as well as normal breast cells) act by increasing the amount of cyclic AMP, while estrogen lowers the amount of cAMP and increases cell growth. Minton’s argument should have been to use more caffeine, in proportion to the degree of breast disease, if he were arguing logically from his evidence. Caffeine’s effect on the breast resembles that of progesterone, opposing estrogen’s effects.

Many studies over the last 30 years have shown caffeine to be highly protective against all kinds of carcinogenesis, including estrogen’s carcinogenic effects on the breast. Caffeine is now being used along with some of the standard cancer treatments, to improve their effects or to reduce their side effects. There are substances in the coffee berry besides caffeine that protect against mutations and cancer, and that have shown strong therapeutic effects against cancer. Although many plant substances are protective against mutations and cancer, I don’t know of any that is as free of side effects as coffee. "

Do you take Progest E? All my menopausal symptoms were resolved taking Progest E - so fast I could hardly believe it.

I also recommend reading all Peat's articles on progesterone - perhaps start with:

Hot Flashes, energy, and aging

I buy my Progest E from Electrical Body

Neither coffee or salt have ever exacerbated my menopausal symptoms but everyone's different.

hello everyone and thanks for your input .Thinking about it logically I have been a heavy user of chocolate, cocoa etc .I dont know just how much caffeine is in these things maybe blaming coffee isnt logical .I think maybe I'll carry on and see what happens. Its difficult to say what is coincidence and what is the direct affect of soemthing else .
Ive taken some time to read some of the recommended articles again and it does seem that any potential negatives are far out weighed by the positives.(of caffeine )
I havnt used the Progest E ,I'm in the UK and I dont know if its available.
Before menopause I was troubled with fibrous and tender breasts , I always used an IUD and a few years before meno I used the progesterone only pill. Ive never used hormone replacement but tried to get through meno naturally .
What does Peat say about Iodine ?. I managed to get rid of fibrous breast tissue using Lugols but then I stopped using it I dont know why except you get tired of taking stuff. maybe I should try it again.

He thinks 150 micrograms per day is a safe amount to consume. Megadosing might bring short-term benefits at the cost of long term thyroid suppression.

He avoid iodized salt, and uses Morton's Canning and Pickling Salt.
