Dr. Will Hooker from North Carolina State University has a full lecture series on permaculture.
If you've never heard of permaculture (or "permanent culture,") it's a "sustainable, model for agricultural (and effectively cultural) systems. Dr. Hooker mentions that metropolises have a greater efficiency with regard to the concentrated population density, (where, in effect more land can be devoted to farming.)
Regardless of the sustainability of large cities, polyculture (as opposed to monoculture) has numerous benefits, which you can read about here: Polyculture - Practical Plants
In the second video of his series, Dr. Hooker emphasizes energy cycling, which involves the exploitation of existing and creation of new natural systems to manage an ecological sphere. He uses the example of placing a water heater in the sunlight to increase the speed and efficiency of the machine, for example.
