Isn't it a festive dish, which is eaten only rarely during holidays? Normally traditional diets are diets of poore people , that can not afford to eat meat often.
My girlfriend from Okinawa says that the older generations tend to eat more of this dish and more frequently, whereas the younger generations only have it for holidays or special occasions. This is mainly due to changing beliefs of what foods are healthy and which are not. The younger generations are susceptible to the same misinformation that the rest of the western world is and the idea of pork being a health food is generally not well received. At least that’s her theory.
