The maps in this Italian infographic strongly suggests that it is the population density in Italy that accounts for the distribution of coronavirus deaths. The infographic is a visual display; no Italian skills are needed. Pollution is just a side effect of population density.

Another side effect of population density is the need to use mass transit. Coincidently, NYC has the largest mass transit system and no requirement for its passengers to use gloves and masks.

Edit: Here is the English language version of the infographic

This thread is about the Po Valley. There the geographical and weather conditions favor smog. Population density surely is a factor in air pollution, but it's not the only one. Please check the original post.

Thank You. What about some of the old modifiable risk factors for hypertension? Is the air polution in the Po Valley so outrageously high to dwarf their impact?
Hypertency: Hypertension Modifiable Risk Factors

I personally think it is a combination of things.
Air pollution leads to hypertension. It also affects lipid levels. Smoking is a sort of air pollution.

From the study I linked:
Cardiovascular Effects of Air Pollution

Airborne pollution appears as a triggering factor of cardiovascular events provoking significant changes in HR,
HRV, vascular tone, blood coagulability, and BP. While some of the effects are developed acutely, the progression
of atherosclerosis accelerates as a response to the chronic exposure to elevated concentrations of air pollutants. Likewise, air pollution was related with lower highdensity lipoprotein (HDL). Oxidative stress and inflammation might promote changes in HDL structure and function that result in proatherogenic or dysfunctional HDL.
