Nitrous Oxide (N2O) Prevents Suicidal Behavior, Reverses Learned Helplessness

First, please note that this study is about nitrous oxide (N2O) and not nitric oxide (NO). There is a huge difference in effects despite the minor difference in chemical structure. Peat has written about both - the benefits of the former and the dangers of the latter. N2O is commonly known as laughing gas and is widely used in surgical procedures, as well as recreationally due to its rapid antidepressant and dissociative effects. N2O is a known NMDA and 5-HT3 antagonist, as well as GABA and glycine agonist. It is perhaps its extremely rapid antidepressant effects (much quicker onset than even ketamine) that is behind the beneficial effects the study below is based on. As many of you know, there is no currently known effective treatment for suicidal behavior / ideation, except possibly electroconvulsive therapy. N2O has shown a lot of promise in animal studies and according to the authors of the study below, it should be able to prevent suicide in humans as well. Furthermore, as the authors themselves state, suicidal behavior is an extreme form of learned helplessness and N2O can quickly reverse such a state. As a side note, N2O is a strong oxidizing agent and as such has positive effects on the redox balance of the organism including NAD/NADH ratio, CO2 levels, and of course thyroid function. So, the metabolic foundation in depression, learned helplessness and suicide is highly visible once again.

Nitrous oxide seems beneficial to me, but ray has concerns about it raising nitric oxide. And it can also cause neuropathy by depleting b12.


Hmm. I’m curious about the anaesthetic noble gases, like xenon, that ray has said are expensive but good. Does anyone know where to obtain? There’s also carbogen

He mentioned it in one of his articles and I think 3 of his newsletters. Adamantane has a very similar effects on structuring water and is dissociative and possibly sedative in higher doses, much like N2O. It is also a known NMDA antagonist, same as N2O, so the parallels in effects is not a coincidence.

im going to ask ray about this Bc when I asked if he thought nitrous oxide was beneficial he said no Bc it raises nitric oxide

Dont do it Kids.
It only inhibits B12 for 3-4 days. If you're not B12 deficient and only use nitrous oxide once every month or so, you should be okay.

It doesn't inhibit B12, it modifies it irreversibly. You will get B12 deficient in your CNS.

Yes it oxidizes the cobalt irreversibly. They've used it for anesthesia for literally centuries and the only case reports of people being hurt from nitrous oxide in journals, that I can find, are from people who used it literally everyday.

If you can find any reports of harm from people using it intermittently, please post it.

N2O is quite dangerous and neurotoxic, and chronic low grade degeneration is underresearched and underreported/deemed as caused by surgery/confounding illness etc.

Do you know/suspect if it oxidizes ALL cobalt, or just some noteworthy percentage?

Do you know/suspect if it oxidizes ALL cobalt, or just some noteworthy percentage?
The dose required for therapeutic effect will oxidize enough to be harmful, if taken chronically. That's why all the studies have at least a one month cooling-off period.

Interesting paper to read. The naloxone part especially, which had seemingly contradictory effects at different times or dosage. The authors admit they don't understand why since their theory was the nitrous oxide worked on the opiate system. Of course, it's a small study with a messy design, but I always enjoy reading studies like this more TBH.

Patient 1 was able to orgasm merely by fantasizing. Impressive!
