I wish they'd said which village this was in. I suspect ground water pollution.
Good thought. In general India suffers from horrible pollution from innumerable sources - ie. lack of trash collection leaving huge trash piles in city streets, public defamation on beaches etc etc.

In this particular case I don't know, but they are always trying to blame diseases caused by environmental toxins on viruses (or prions). That's why I want to know what village that boy lived in because a Coca Cola plant badly polluted the groundwater in that same Indian state. Mad cow disease was almost certainly caused by manganese poisoning, but they blame it on hypothetical infectious prions.
