Your bad image of pharmaceutical companies falls short

January 14, 2021

The multinational pharmaceutical company Moderna has received the “Shkreli Award”, named after Martin Shkreli. In 2015, Shkreli bought the exclusive Daraprim, a drug capable of “fighting AIDS”, or so he said at least. The price of the drug immediately jumped 5,000 percent. It went from $ 13.50 to more than $ 750.

Today Shkreli is serving a 7-year prison sentence for fraud and manipulation of the share price. In Spain hardly anyone knows him, but the BBC qualifies him as "the most hated man in the United States", "morally bankrupt sociopath", "scum", "monstrous garbage" and "everything bad about capitalism" (1 ).

Created by the Lown Institute, the Shkreli Prize rewards the worst examples of greed and speculation in the healthcare business. When Moderna priced its vaccine, it turned out to be the highest of any manufacturer - between $ 32 and $ 37 per dose. However, Moderna had received 1 billion dollars from the public money of the United States.

For those who still have the capacity to be scandalized, it was a scandal. Fortunately, there were also many who were also scandalized and, under pressure from public opinion, in November of last year, Moderna lowered the prices of its vaccine: about $ 30 for the two doses necessary for each vaccinated person.

The pharmaceutical market thus sets its prices and the Lown Institute deservedly punished Moderna for its greed (2), since until then the company had no experience in the manufacture of vaccines. The coronavirus is the first to be approved.

As a good biotech company, Moderna has a doormat full of crap ...

On May 7, Ian Haydon, one of the guinea pigs who participated in the coronavirus vaccine trials, recounted his experience in an interview with CNN (3). Naturally it was Moderna who put him in front of the television cameras. The interview had to be pure publicity for the pharmaceutical company and the success of its trials.

When the interviewer heard the true story, he agreed to keep the content of the interview secret until it was time to air. Thanks to the trick, true information about Moderna's vaccine emerged.

Less than 12 hours after receiving the vaccine, Haydon experienced muscle aches, vomiting, a high fever, and loss of consciousness. His girlfriend had to hold him as he collapsed. His test supervisor asked him to call 911 and described him as "the sickest man in his life."

Moderna's hitmen did not tell him that he was having an adverse reaction to the vaccine. They made him believe that the disease was a sad coincidence not related to it. Obvious. Almost a cliché.

Moderna is a modern technological and scientific company. It was founded in the United States in 2010 and is led by Stéphane Bancel. The French billionaire owns 9 percent of the shares and runs the multinational as if it were the gentleman's farmhouse.

In 2016, the Stat News website took an interest in Bancel, which in one year had fired more than a dozen of the hitmen who sat next to him on the company's board of directors. He did the same with some scientists and, incidentally, with the projects they had in hand.
