Mexican Coke Faces Extinction, May Drop Cane Sugar for Fructose

Die-hard fans of Mexican Coca-Cola, let us ruin your day. On Thursday, Oct. 31, an ominous new soda sales tax hit Mexico. The new levy will impose an extra peso ($.08) per liter of every soft drink sale in the country. In turn, executives of Mexico’s soda industry warned that this may cause a shift from the drink’s beloved cane sugar to corn syrup.

Oh boy, and read the last paragraph of the article:
For those of you already lamenting the loss, Quartz points out that Mexicoke fans might already be guzzling down more high-fructose corn syrup than they think. In 2010, researchers from the University of Southern California’s Keck School of Medicine tested the contents of Mexican Coca-Cola purchased in east LA. The verdict? While the Mexican Coke featured “sugar” under the ingredients, the laboratory results did not detect any sucrose. Instead, near equal amounts of glucose and fructose were found — indicators of high fructose corn syrup.

It's not the caffeine that reduces the iron IIRC.

There is more than one type of caffeine?

It's not the caffeine, its the phenols or something like that, or tannins, heck I don't remember. lol Mittir posted about it before.

I see, that's bad. At least it doesn't have vitamin C which enhances absorption of iron.

And caffeine is one of them. But I'd find it plausible that you get even more of those compounds in coffee which has not just caffeine.

disappointing to hear if that is the case...there are a lot of knockoffs that are colas with cane sugar, even an organic one or two...but coke, its so meaningfull...simply because its coke...and they use coca extract

you think maybe the cane sugar is just hydrolyzing under all the bottled up osmotic and Co2 pressure...and that's why the sugars are free molecules? Or is it positively HFCS

HFCS is 45/55, I forget which is higher. I think it's invert sugar, even a weak acid over a period of time can hydrolyze sucrose. And mislabeling food is no small matter. :2cents

There's tons of other brands that use cane sugar but none of them have the same kick as Mexican coke... maybe that's because of all the acid or the fact that I was unwittingly drinking HFCS all along, no idea.

The bottler is claiming that the kind imported into the US will keep using sugar:

Arca Continental, the Mexican bottler in question, stressed in a statement that it has no plans to change the sweetener for the "Coca-Cola Nostalgia" bottles it exports to the U.S. Those will continue to use 100 percent cane sugar, it said.
