They were in a catabolic state, weightloss (lowering metabolism) breaking down the thyroid tissue, stressful environment... giving them more sugar would have probably alleviated a lot of the issues.
Someone on the peatarian forums mentioned having schizophrenic symptoms though, so you might want to ask them about their experiences.

This concerns me as it seemingly goes against Ray Peat's Ideas.

I think what their referring to tsh, due to this study on bromocriptine. which is a stress hormone according to ray peat

Yes it does lower gonadal function but it only refer to lh and fsh which ray peat advocates as a stress hormone. It can probably raise t levels by lowering prolactin
