Low Socioeconomic Status Affects Life Expectancy More Than Obesity

I think the "war on obesity" we are seeing currently, while well-intentioned, may be a bit misplaced as obesity itself has now been tied to low socioeconomic status. This study has now found that that low status is more important for your overall life expectancy than how much you weigh. Given the effects of stress on thyroid function, the findings are not surprising. Low socioeconomic status has also been shown to suppress immune function, lower testosterone, increase serotonin, lower dopamine, and of course raise the deadly cortisol. So, the proposal is now for low status to be treated as a disease risk biomarker and not simply as a triviality of life.

Low Socioeconomic Status Affects Life Expectancy More Than Obesity

"...A low socioeconomic status is so damaging to health, it reduces life expectancy by 2.1 years. That's worse than obesity or high blood pressure and a consortium of global researchers are calling for it to be treated like any other major health risk factor. The global study included data from 40,000 Melbournians courtesy of Cancer Council Victoria as well as studies from the UK, France, Switzerland, Portugal, Italy and the USA. In these countries, researchers showed a low socioeconomic status was a major risk factor in ill health and premature death, but was rarely recognised in official health policy."

Telling. It is like this one that came out recently as well:

Most remaining smokers in US have low socioeconomic status
Disparities among smokers widening as most vulnerable find it hardest to quit

Does not surprise me. Smoking and coffee keep the metabolic rate high and protect from some of the stress. If you go to poor countries, many people (even children) smoke and drink a lot of coffee or tea.

The cluster of findings: low t, high serotonin, high cortisol may also explain the "cultural" psychopathology.
We've all heard about the lack empathy with psychopaths and the self-referential narcissist. Have you run across any studies linking the capacity/incapacity for remorse with serotonin? What conditions are necessary to have remorse?

Of course, even the Wikipedia page on psychopathy mentions the high serotonin connection.
Psychopathy - Wikipedia
"...However, some studies on animal and human subjects have suggested that the emotional-interpersonal traits and predatory aggression of psychopathy, in contrast to impulsive and reactive aggression, is related to increased serotoninergic functioning.[116][117][118][119]A study by Dolan and Anderson on the relationship between setotonin and psychopathic traits in a sample of personality disordered offenders, found that serotonin functioning as measured by prolactin response, while inversely associated with impulsive and antisocial traits, were positively correlated with arrogant and deceitful traits, and, to a lesser extent, callous and remorseless traits.[120] Bariş Yildirim theorizes that the 5-HTTLPR "long" allele, which is generally regarded as protective against internalizing disorders, may interact with other serotoninergic genes to create a hyper-regulation and dampening of affective processes that results in psychopathy's emotional impairments.[121] Furthermore, the combination of the 5-HTTLPR long allele and high testosterone levels has been found to result in a reduced response to threat as measured by cortisol reactivity, which mirrors the fear deficits found in those afflicted with psychopathy.[122]"

This actually just says having a crappy job is bad for you. Which I think most people kind of already know on some level.

This is worrying,as much as they say every generation has claims of doomsday and we are the worse etc, these traits of arrogance, deceitful, callous and remorseful are big business and success slogans of today.

You can be poor and happy if you have strong family/community bonds.

The lower/middle class have been subjected to a continuous stream of social engineering to break those down though.

They use "socioeconomic status" in the title because that terminology is catnip for psuedo-marxists who cite this stuff. If you look at the actual paper all it says is having a shitty job is bad for you. Being a day laborer or clerk sucks. It's kind of stating the obvious, not really providing a jumping off point to talk about family and friends.

The policy take-away would have to be that driving up wages at the low end would be a good idea. Like, for example, shutting down immigration.
