NOT as a replacement for sugar, but rather to help at other times. Isomalt is mixture of 50% Glucose 25% Sorbitol and 25% Mannitol. The glucose part is pretty self-explanatory so I'm going to focus on Sorbitol and Mannitol. I'm not an expert on these sugar alcohols but I have definitely found them helpful so wasn't surprised to read about the other uses they have. Mannitol is particularly well known to have life-saving effects under the right circumstances. Sorbitol is less commonly used, but in mythology the Sorbus ( Rowan ) Tree is associated with protection. Isomalt can be found in dollar store sugar free candies. Werther's Sugar free carmels is one brand they sell here in the U.S.
