A couple of drops of olive oil dribbled into the ears to help soften and dilute it so it can move out more easily over time? I haven't tried it, but I've heard the advice a few times. Seems like a benign thing to try.

some interesting facts.

Earwax problems are twice as common in people with "learning disabilities" and also with people who had their back teeth extracted, probably because this limited some of their chewing that apparently helps earwax drain

Can removal of back teeth contribute to chronic earwax obstruction? - Fransman - 2005 - British Journal of Learning Disabilities - Wiley Online Library

Also, preparing the ear for 15 - 30 minutes, with either water drops or oil, is equally effective in softening ear wax and making it easier to syringe out

In the Mark Starr book on Hypothyroidism he talks about excessive earwax being related to hypothyroidism. He said that he had a problem with it and when he treated his thyroid it went away.

Works like a treat for my husband. Ear Wax Remover. Large clumps came out - there was some brief nausea.

I've always had issues with ear wax. Couple of drops of olive oil for 1 - 2 days always used to help me, the wax would literally just come out. I always made the mistake of using my finger to take it out and quite often my inner ear would get infected.

I eventually just went to the doctor and they suctioned it out with some air sucking machine - excuse the scientific terminology here ? lol!

a buddy has asked me. Too much earwax accumulating. Any suggestions? Thanks

My husband tried a number of home remedies, commercial and whatever he found online. All of them made his hearing problem worse, to the point where he couldn't hear at all. He was thinking about ordering a scary looking device on Amazon and I insisted he see a doctor.

So he called up a Helping U Hear office in a Wal-Mart. It was the top item that came up in when he googled ear wax removal.

In any case, they remove ear wax. The person who treated him was not a doctor but a hearing aid specialist. Nevertheless, she stuck something in his ear and "gently lifted stuff out." The treatment was $70. It took less than 10 minutes for both ears (less than 5 minutes an ear). It tickled a little bit but the specialist was very gentle. It didn't hurt at all.

Huge gobs of brownish/orangish ear wax came out of both ears. Huge amounts. Now he can hear perfectly.

Me:
What is the underlying cause of excessive ear wax?

Ray:
I think the factors that are responsible for oily skin and dandruff are involved—namely, a balance of multiple hormones, especially thyroid, androgens, vitamin D, and vitamin A.

I accumulated so much earwax when in high school. My teacher noticed I didn't hear well, no one else did.

I went to an EENT and the next months that followed were unforgetful for the pain I had in getting all my lifetime earwax removed. Then I was around 16 years.

When I was done, the gate that I open to enter the apartment complex sounded like a church bell to me from what I was used to hearing.

From then on, I would occasionally clean my ears with a q-tip after a shower.

But I'm told that really isn't needed with a healthy person as earwax shouldn't be so much and when it leaves a film on the ear, it should just shed off naturally.

I don't know, but maybe if the earwax doesn't oxidize like PUFA, it would come off and not accumulate?

I noticed when I eliminated PUFA and started taking Estroban (A, D and E) that the consistency of my ear wax changed radically.

All my life it has been thin, pale and watery. Now it is dry, brown and flaky. It gets impacted easily, even though I don’t stick anything in my ears.

Recently I had an outer ear infection from it. When it’s built up a lot and I wear headphones it’s bad. I was able to resolve the infection with a combination of olive oil drops with oregano tincture in them and application of a heating pad to my ear several times. But eventually I had to have a doctor clean it out even though the infection was gone.

I wonder if the vitamin A, D and E is somehow causing it to be solid at normal temperature like saturated fat compared to unsaturated fat?

This is the only negative side effect I’ve experienced from eliminating PUFA and taking supplemental A, D and E. But it is periodically a serious problem.

I take Synthroid and have my thyroid checked regularly. I haven’t had any thyroid related symptoms since switching to brand name Synthroid a year ago. I know this is not related to my thyroid levels. I’ve had varying severity of hypothyroidism for decades with the consistently watery ear wax. It never changed until I eliminated PUFA and started taking A, D and E.

It has to be “saturating” the ear wax somehow. I’m thinking there must be a way to offset this. There’s no way Neolithic people lived with this problematic ear wax.

Hehe, I had the same exact experience a few years ago, when I was driving home after having the earwax removed, any tiny squeak sounded like my car was literally falling apart. The first few nights were also... interesting, it seemed like I could hear mosquitoes outside through the closed triple-pane windows.

I'm not sure where the dividing line is between inner and outer ear, but I'm pretty sure it didn't go past the eardrum. It was painful getting the wax off as scraping off the wax, the doctor can't avoid sometimes hitting the eardrum, and that was very painful.

You probably have my dad's ESP when it comes to hearing. I swear he could hear me speaking behind his back. I have since become wary of people with hair growing out of their ear. Except myself lol

by unwinding your fascial tension earwax will normalize. Same is true for tinnitus.

I remember seeing a video of Dr. Jonathan Wright, where he said that ear wax accumulation was the result of not enough choline/lecithin in the diet. Not sure how true that is, but it sort of makes sense since those compounds are emulsifying and may thin out the wax so that it does not get hard and accumulate. Enough eggs in the diet should fix that problem.
