I was wondering what this group's thoughts on this were?

Oh, it's certainly possible, but the question is how accurate the calculations are. There is the Harris Benedict Equation, and also Mifflin St. Jeor. If you have a good estimate of bodyfat percentage, there's also Katch-McCardle, which is generally thought to be superior.

They pretty much factor weight, height, age, and gender into the equation. At the very least, they are decent starting points. FYI, all the new wearable fitness devices (like fitbit and jawbone and such) use one of these equations to calculate BMR.
