DCA has a direct inhibitory effect on PDK, which restores activity of PDH and thus glucose metabolism. Unfortuately it is cytotoxic and chronic use of DCA may itself trigger (secondary) cancer but for brief usage of say 2-3 weeks it is probably acceptable.
I am not aware of ethyl acetoacete (EA) having direct effects on PDK but it activates PDH by lowering FFA and inhibitng their oxidation. So, similar in systemic effects to DCA but likely different specific mechanism of action.
