This podcast episode is great. Not only is the storytelling really interesting, the implications of the research are crazy. The upshot of his research is that we may be drastically mis-calibrating the results of rat studies because of the telomere lengths of the specific rats that have been used in US experiments during the last several decades. Our toxicology studies and drug safety/intervention studies may be understating the dangers of whatever is being tested because of this.

Another thing in rat studies is time relativity. This study on montelukast's brain rejuvenating activity points to something very important but yet always omitted. A week of mice's life is not equal a week of human's life. It's most probably, I speculate, 1 month=3-5 years.

Regarding Eric's exasperation with the anti-climax of Epstein's story and Bret's observation, there isn't really anything an angry public can do in those situations. If a manufacturer is revealed to use sweat shop labor, the angry public can stop buying that manufacturer's products. If the public can't respond through the market, what are they going to do, send a letter to their senator? Whenever the market is not included in the feedback mechanism, it is up to a few influential individuals to apply the pressure. It's much more probable to have a critical mass of people make a minor change to their habits that add up in aggregate to cause the offending party to consider changing their ways, than for a few hyper influential people to put their personal safety, careers, social cachet on the line.
