Interesting.......

"The effects of a serial dilution of linoleic acid on human spermatozoa in whole semen was tested on 21 semen samples obtained from 11 normal volunteers. The minimal concentration of linoleic acid required to stop the movement of at least 75% of the moving sperm ranged from 1 to greater than 100 mg/dl. Fifteen of 21 (71%) of the semen samples were inhibited by added free fatty acids (FFA) concentrations that were less than or close to the physiologic concentration ranges of FFA in blood plasma (1 to 30 mg/dl). The immobilized sperm often formed aggregates similar to those formed by the action of autoantibodies against sperm cells. Preliminary studies conducted on a variety of other FFA have indicated that oleic acid (18/1) was less toxic than linoleic acid (18/2) and that linolenic acid (18/3) was more toxic than linoleic acid. The saturated FFA palmitic acid (16/0) and stearic acid (18/0) at concentrations up to 100 mg/dl showed little or no toxicity to sperm cells. It is suggested that FFA toxicity be included among physiologic factors that affect the motility and spontaneous aggregation of sperm cells".

Does this mean PUFA makes the best lubricants for preventing pregnancy?

I'm curious to all this because the marching band of DHA and fish oil shills have riddled the research full of their usual studies of supplementation being good for your balls all round, including sperm.
The studies ,as is the norm leave you with questions so obvious as to why they didn't check so and so? Perhaps they missed it.......
One thing is clear, the sperm adapt to dietary changes very quick, this is why these studies claiming dha and PUFA are good need to be taken with the usual tablespoon of salt.
The studies pro PUFA and DHA are like prayers or mantras at this stage, just accept what we say.

New term is "sperm fluidity", spine tingling ring to it.

This study is interesting,

Essential fatty acid deficiency induces fatty acid desaturase expression in rat epididymis, but not in testis

"On the molecular level, essential fatty acid deficiency (EFAD) has been associated with induced fatty acid (FA) desaturase expression and activity in several tissues. However, there seem to be exceptions. In the present study, we examine the effects of EFAD in the male rat genital tract, combining FA analysis, gene expression studies, and morphological evaluation of epididymal spermatozoa. When feeding 21-day-old Wistar rats, a fat-free diet for 6 weeks, an increase in 18:1n-9 and 20:3n-9 and a concomitant decrease in the 18:2n-6 and 20:4n-6 species are seen in testis, as well as in liver. However, with regard to desaturase expression the rat testis seems to be unresponsive to EFAD conditions, in contrast to other organs studied. In the sexually mature testis none of the desaturases (SCD1, SCD2, D5D, or D6D) are induced in response to lowered contents of polyunsaturated FAs. This also applies to caput epididymis, while EFAD sensitivity is regained in cauda epididymis, where the desaturases are upregulated. The FA profile of epididymal spermatozoa is increasingly affected by EFAD during the transport from testis to cauda epididymis. Furthermore, a significant increase in the number of abnormal spermatozoa is observed in cauda epididymis".

Seems like an impressive study right until we read-
"Concerning testis and epididymis, knowledge about the molecular events resulting from EFAD is scarce. We have earlier shown that the desaturase expression in Sertoli cells is hormonally regulated, and all four desaturases are induced by insulin, dexamethasone, and follicle-stimulating hormone (Saether et al. 2003). However, the dietary regulation of the desaturases in testis and the male reproductive tract has so far not been addressed"

What was the essential fatty acid deificient mouse diet made up of-
"The EFAD group was fed fat-free pellets (ICN Biomedicals, Aurora, OH, USA) consisting of 0.4% methionine, 1% cellulose, 2% vitamin mix, 5% salt mix, 20% casein, 20% sucrose, and 52% maize starch".

Why the calories were not increased relative to a potential speeding up of metabolism from lowered PUFA?
Under this stress the maize starch will also increase endotoxin.

They were essential fatty acid deficient either, makes you think if some of theses EFAD tests actually lower PUFA enough and the increased metabolism is causing issues from burning PUFA.

"Testosterone is converted to the more biologically active androgen dihydrotestosterone, which is essential for the maturation of spermatozoa (Orgebin-Christ et al. 1976, Henderson & Robaire 2005). Thus, it cannot be excluded that the increased sperm abnormalities observed in our study, is an androgen-dependent effect induced by the diet. Whether these changes affect the sperm function remains to be answered".

This quote is the conclusion from the above study, I think if we look we will find rat chow styled diets effecting androgens in males...........

On DHT's importance for sperm quality not necessarily quantity being the issue, the following study-

Inhibiting conversion of testosterone to DHT showed a marked reduction in sperm quality, mousse babies could not be made, balls not working.

Isn't it impressive then that studies on the importance of DHA and PUFA in general will not measure hormones in many cases?
Some of these studies are like claiming men who had sex with their socks on are less likely to achieve successful pregnancies.
