I'm Losing More Hair Than I Ever Have

This is probably because of my recent tianeptine-abusing stint. It wasn't that bad, I wasn't taking such large doses. And I have dabbled very little in drugs throughout my life. I'm not a junkie. But I did abuse tianeptine a bit, and now I'm paying for it.

I bought 10 grams in 2016, which I took regularly, in very small doses, throghout the last three years. In the end I got a little carried away and started taking larger doses. When I ran out, I suffered acute withdrawal symptoms for about four days. And then my hair began to fall out.

During the time I was taking the large doses I wasn't shedding very much. My hair was pretty strong. Probably due to tianeptine's serotonin-reducing effect. During the days of acute withdrawal I didn't notice any increased shedding either. But after the painful withdrawal ended I noticed a significant increase in shedding.

If I wash my hair, the drain gets clogged with hair. I just sweeped my apartment, and it was almost like sweeping a hair salon. I was sweeping these quite voluminous clusters of hair into the shovel. Every time I remove my headphones, a few strands of hair will be curled around each pad. And right after sweeping the floors I already see a few new hairs on them. Basically I seem to be shedding a lot, and non-stop.

My diet is a pretty standard Peat-based diet. Mostly OJ, milk, coffee with plenty of sugar, a steak every few days. It does the job. Sticking to this diet would reliably keep my hair in good shape. But not this time.

Eating a large starch-based meal seems to ameliorate things a bit. A few days ago I ate a large plate of pasta with tomato sauce and grated cheese and the shedding seemed to diminish a bit. Now I'm trying boiled potatoes with a bit of fat. The pasta seems to work better for some reason though, even though it's wheat-based, iron-fortified pasta.

If I don't eat starch I get diarrhea. I think it's some kind of rebound effect. Upon stopping the tianeptine my serotonin came back with a vengeance. My intestines will roar throughout the day. I can feel the liquids churning inside. And my bowel movements are of the "fierce diarrhea" kind. But if I stuff myself with starch the shedding diminishes somewhat, and my bowel movements are normal.

I have ordered some Vit D3, taurine and niacinamide which I will get later today. Taurine has worked great in the past for my hair. I wish I also had some Cynoplus on hand. Taurine and Cynoplus are the two supplements that have stopped my hair loss completely for a while when taking them.

So: what might this all mean? Should I keep loading up on pasta and hope it will just go away? Why did Cynoplus work so well for me, and what might I take which would yield a similar result? Any tips here will be greatly appreciated.

I don’t have much time -
But I really wanted to respond

Could the diarrhea be from hyperthyroidism?
What are your labs?

Being hyperthyroid will make you shed badly- it did for me when I was on too much thyroid that I couldn’t support due to malnutrition and very fatigued adrenals.

Anyway-
It sounds as if you could have Telogen Effluvium.
And something triggered it two to three months ago
Just a hunch.

The unusual diarrhea just after stopping tianeptine is from the mu opioid withdrawal. Also, the appetite may be low or queasy stomach, too. Serotonin might contribute but its opioid activity was discovered in 2014 & would definitively cause that after stopping it. I think Peat is right about the endorphins, so whatever the mechanism is with the body coping with physiological stress, I believe some hair shedding could follow that.

I doubt I'm hyperthyroid. I haven't supplemented thyroid in years, and my hands are often cold.

But yes, telogen effluvium, that might be it. During the days I was abusing tianeptine I would be up for like 30 hours. I must have done that two or three times. I would sometimes wake up feeling sore in my arms and legs. My digestive system would feel sore, too. So yes - I must have wrecked my metabolism a bit, and the shedding might be a result of that.

Yes. I had diarrhea when I was abusing tianeptine, and diarrhea during withdrawal seems to be a commonly related symptom on /r/QuittingTianeptine. And yes, my appetite was low when I was taking tianeptine. Maybe it still is a little lower than usual.

Endorphins are bad according to Peat, right? Funny thing though, the QuittingTianeptine guys advise going for a run, it ameliorates withdrawal symptoms. So I did go run on the street a bit a few days ago, I ran until I was sweaty and exhausted, and it gave me a very pleasant endorphine high. But I wonder if I might have aggravated the shedding by doing that.

The thing is that cortisol can actually feel good in the short term. Intense exercise can feel good, until an hour or two after when the crash occurs. Same thing with coffee, masturbation/porn and many other forms of intense stimulation - short term benefit at the expense of long term health.

I should clarify - those activities aren't always harmful, but they easily can be especially if one is hypo.

Losing hair and feeling sore in your arms and legs are both symptoms of Vitamin D deficiency. I'm glad you have ordered some D3. Hopefully you can also get some more sun exposure. Also a good idea to get your Vitamin D level tested.
