- Evidence for Inflammation as a Cause of Hypocholesterolemia in Older People
"We have proposed that clinical disease, chronic disease, or immune dysregulation leads to low cholesterol through the production of proinflammatory cytokines and the subsequent action of cytokines on lipoprotein metabolism.[2] Several studies indicate that several proinflammatory cytokines lower cholesterol acutely in nonhuman primates and in human being.[2,7-9] Cytokines appear to cause hypocholesterolemia by inhibiting hepatic production of lipoproteins, lowering the cholesterol content of lipoprotein particles, and increasing the catabolism of lipoprotein.[7,8,14] Furthermore, disease states in which these cytokines have been found to be elevated are associated with low cholesterol.[2,5,6,15]"
"The purpose of this study was to determine if older persons with hypocholesterolemia were more likely to have evidence of an ongoing inflammatory process than normocholesterolemic subjects. In agreement with previously published studies, the subjects with hypocholesterolemia had more chronic illnesses, lower serum albumin, and a higher mortality rate than the control group. Moreover, a higher proportion of hypocholesterolemic subjects had cytokines detectable in serum."
