I researched chronicle diseases a bit and many people claim they got ill after very stressful times like when they lost somebody or lost their job etc.

Even my girlfriends mother claims she got diabetic after fleeing from war.

Could cortisol be one of the most important triggers of chronicle diseases?

How can we keep it in a good range?

From reading Dr. Brownsteins' book on Iodine, a sudden acute stressor (or a large amount of chronic stress) can indeed bring about spontaneous hypothyroid (some of his patients he received were those who had this occur to them). He hints at the reason, though doesn't come out and say it. All of his example patients he talks about, without fail, had low Iodine levels. What it sounds like is an acute stressor can drain most/all your bodys' stores of Iodine, and immediately bringing upon a hypo thyroid state since the thyroid no longer can pump out T4/T3 at the rate it needs to.

In a situation like this, it may be wise to immediately get your thyroid checked out to see if you indeed did lose a bunch of Iodine. So anything majorly depressing / stressful that happens in your life. Just to make sure you're covered. It may also be wise to immediately get on some T3 (probably not so much T4, because the body may just convert the T4 you take into rT3 which is not helpful). Might need to go on both T3 AND iodine. Iodine alone may not suffice here, because as mentioned, in a high stress state, it may just convert to rT3 and compound the dysfunction.
