How Do You Eat Your Fruit?

For me, I like to eat my fruit separate from other foods. I think I read Dr. Peat said fruit goes well with protein?

But I like to eat my fruit away from other foods. Usually it’s first thing in the morning. Or between lunch and dinner. Or an evening snack.

I feel best physically when the fruit is eaten separately form all other foods.

I find I do not digest food well when I eat the fruit with other foods.

Sometimes I will have it in a shake with milk and gelatin though. But I prefer to eat my fruit away from other foods.

I consume my fruit as a snack with other foods or as part of my main meals--in milkshakes, as a topping on yogurt, fresh with milk, cheese, quiche, omelettes, custard etc.--because I find I'm not satisfied otherwise, however, I no longer eat a ton of fruit--just a serving at most--so I digest it well in mixed meals. When fruit made up the majority of the calories in my meals, I experienced digestive issues like cramping and bloating.

For me, fruit’s digestion depends entirely on ripeness. If it’s ripe, which is extremely rare even here in California, I can eat it with other meals or on its own and digest it wonderfully. Especially melons, grapes, papaya, and orange juice.

But right now, I don’t think there’s a single ripe fresh fruit in a local grocery store—even oranges. And if it’s just a tiny bit unripe, it tanks my temperatures and ruins my digestion, even eaten alone.

So sadly, fruit is off the menu for me entirely these days. The juice just isn’t worth the squeeze.

Frozen blueberries, frozen mango cubes, frozen strawberries, frozen cranberries, some sugar, some stevia, in raw goat’s milk. Blend. Better than ice cream.

I love frozen fruit bars. It’s probably one of my favorite snacks.

I eat most of my fruit with my meals (baked pears) or in a milkshake (with frozen cherries and sometimes a few frozen strawberries or lychees, magnesium glycinate, collagen and usually cynoplus). I strain out the fiber to avoid digestive issues + I drink OJ or red grape juice

Both of these I ended up with after a year+ of trying and failing to get enough carbs on a zero starch diet. For me these two options ensure proper digestion (if I ate all these pears and cherries raw my gut would be ruined quickly) while also being cheap

Do you peel the pears, or eat them baked with the skin on them?

Have you tried baking apples?

Yes, I think it’s the fiber content of fruit when eated with other foods, that can be bloating….it is for me. I like to eat my fruit separate from other foods, and usually the first thing. Then I’ll wait like 20-25 minutes till I eat something else. Or I’ll eat fruit as a snack separate from other meals. Just not combined with other foods.

The only time I will have fruit with something else, is like in a dessert, where the fruit is cooked.

Other than that, I eat the fruit alone. Seems to work for me.

* Oh I forgot, sometimes I will have a Stilton cheese which has fruit it it. Other than that, my fruit is separate.

Peeled, boiled, then I boil away the water and add sugar at the end to caramelize. I use conference pears, and I prefer to buy softer ones. Takes about 30-45 min total. Apples take a little longer and my digestion seems better with pears

Ray Peat says eating fruit or honey before the protein is best, to stimulate the digestive juices. I like tangelos cut in chunks sprinkled with sugar as an evening or between meal snack.

I bake and poach pears, both digest so well that way!
