(CNN) - The Food and Drug Administration is investigating an outbreak of hepatitis A in three states that is potentially linked to fresh organic strawberries.

Federal health officials say there have been 17 hepatitis A cases reported as part of the outbreak in California, Minnesota and North Dakota.

The vaccine-preventable liver infection has resulted in 12 hospitalizations so far.

The brands of organic strawberries involved are FreshKampo and HEB and were sold at Aldi, Kroger, Safeway, Sprouts, Trader Joe’s and Walmart, among a few other stores.

Most of the illnesses were reported between March 28 to April 30, but hepatitis A symptoms can last up to two months.

If consumers purchased or froze any of the strawberries, the FDA says they should be thrown away.“

As nice and natural as they sound, essential oils on my skin are something I have stayed clear of. They are so concentrated that it is a case of too much of a good thing…

“Lavender oil and tea tree oil contain compounds that mimic or oppose the actions of sex hormones and may be considered endocrine disruptors. Persistent exposure to lavender products is associated with premature breast development in girls, according to new research by NIEHS scientists.”

“Certain parasitic worms that can live inside the human body can also raise the risk of developing some kinds of cancer. These organisms are not found in the United States, but they can be a concern for people who live in or travel to other parts of the world.

Opisthorchis viverrini and Clonorchis sinensis are liver flukes (a type of flatworm) that have been linked to increased risk of developing cancer of the bile ducts. The bile ducts are tubes that connect the liver to the intestines. These infections come from eating raw or undercooked freshwater fish. They occur mostly in East Asia and are rare in other parts of the world.

Schistosoma haematobium is a parasite found in the water of some countries in the Middle East, Africa, and Asia. Infection with this parasite (an illness called schistosomiasis) has been linked to bladder cancer. Possible links to other types of cancer are now being studied as well.“

“In 2009, Peanut Corp of America (PCA) initiated a recall of their peanut butter products after a link was discovered between their products and an outbreak caused by Salmonella Typhimurium. This recall became the most expensive food recall in U.S. history and resulted in nearly 4,000 downstream products being recalled by 361 companies.

Illnesseses related to the PCA outbreak were first discovered in late 2008, and they continued to appear through April 2009, when the Center for Disease Control and Prevention’s last report on the outbreak was published. A total of 714 people were sickened, with 171 hospitalized. Nine people died.

History tells us that these outbreaks take time to fully reveal themselves.

The current CDC investigation of the Salmonella outbreak connected to J.M. Smucker Co.’s Jif peanut butter has revealed 16 illnesses in 12 states. So far 2 people have been hospitalized and no deaths have been reported.

It remains to be seen if this salmonella outbreak reaches anywhere near the same numbers as the 2008-2009 Salmonella Typhimurium outbreak.”
