T Fresh Company of City of Industry, CA, is recalling certain enoki mushrooms grown in China because of potential Listeria monocytogenes contamination.

The potential for contamination was noted after surveillance sampling by the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) revealed the presence of Listeria monocytegenes in 7.05oz (200g) packages of enoki mushroom.

The product was distributed from California and Texas to retail stores through produce distributors.

Recalled product:

Product is packaged in a Light Blue and transparent plastic packaging, with ” Yes” logo for the 200g (7.5oz).
Enoki mushrooms are white, stringy with small caps.
The weight of the product is 7.5 oz (200g).
The UPC barcode numbers are 825382736947 (200g), with no other codes.
As of the posting of this recall, no infections or illnesses have been reported in connection with the recalled product.

Consumers who have purchased our enoki mushrooms are urged to return them to the place of purchase for a full refund.

About Listeria infections
Food contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes may not look or smell spoiled but can still cause serious and sometimes life-threatening infections. Anyone who has eaten any recalled product and developed symptoms of Listeria infection should seek medical treatment and tell their doctors about the possible Listeria exposure.

Also, anyone who has eaten any of the recalled product should monitor themselves for symptoms during the coming weeks because it can take up to 70 days after exposure to Listeria for symptoms of listeriosis to develop.

Symptoms of Listeria infection can include vomiting, nausea, persistent fever, muscle aches, severe headache, and neck stiffness. Specific laboratory tests are required to diagnose Listeria infections, which can mimic other illnesses.

Pregnant women, the elderly, young children, and people such as cancer patients who have weakened immune systems are particularly at risk of serious illnesses, life-threatening infections, and other complications. Although infected pregnant women may experience only mild, flu-like symptoms, their infections can lead to premature delivery, infection of the newborn, or even stillbirth.”

“WASHINGTON – A second round of tests commissioned by the Environmental Working Group found the active ingredient in Monsanto’s Roundup weed killer in every sample of popular oat-based cereal and other oat-based food marketed to children. These test results fly in the face of claims by two companies, Quaker and General Mills, which have said there is no reason for concern. This is because, they say, their products meet the legal standards.

Yet almost all of the samples tested by EWG had residues of glyphosate at levels higher than what EWG scientists consider protective of children’s health with an adequate margin of safety. The EWG findings of a chemical identified as probably carcinogenic by the World Health Organization come on the heels of a major study published in JAMA Internal Medicine that found a significant reduction in cancer risk for individuals who ate a lot of organic food.

The tests detected glyphosate in all 28 samples of products made with conventionally grown oats. All but two of the 28 samples had levels of glyphosate above EWG’s health benchmark of 160 parts per billion, or ppb.

Products tested by Anresco Laboratories in San Francisco included 10 samples of different types of General Mills’ Cheerios and 18 samples of different Quaker brand products from PepsiCo, including instant oatmeal, breakfast cereal and snack bars. The highest level of glyphosate found by the lab was 2,837 ppb in Quaker Oatmeal Squares breakfast cereal, nearly 18 times higher than EWG’s children’s health benchmark.“

You can’t go wrong here heeding Ray Peat’s advice to cook veggies well….

“Our results also stress the need to educate the public on safe and proper handling of fresh organic vegetables before eating them fresh or slightly cooked."

Researchers used a metagenomic technique that identifies DNA in all bacteria present inside FLA.

A third of samples (34%) contained 52 potentially disease-causing types of bacteria including Legionella, Salmonella, and Arcobacter.

The resulting infections can cause conditions including pneumonia and gastrointestinal illness.

The FLA species Vermamoeba vermiformis that commonly causes severe infections in humans was found in a fifth (19%) of vegetable samples; and Acanthamoeba castellanii, which can cause blindness and encephalitis, were identified in almost two thirds (63%) of samples.

Despite the findings, the authors noted that the study only included a small sample of leafy organic vegetables from one city in Spain, and larger studies are needed from different countries to understand more about the microbiological quality and safety of organic vegetables.“

“The recalled products can be identified by the establishment number "EST. 46841" which is on the inside of the USDA mark of inspection. FSIS also posted a list of the affected product labels in order to help consumers.

Officials first identified the problem during routine testing. However, there hasn't been any confirmed reports of illnesses or "adverse reactions" related to the consumption of the affected products to date.

Still, the agency is still concerned that the recalled product may be in consumers’ refrigerators or freezers.”

“Eating low-fat seafood (sole, whitefish, turbot, scallops, oysters, lobster, shrimp, squid, etc.) once in a while can provide useful trace minerals, without much risk. However, fish from some parts of the ocean contain industrial contaminants in the fat, and large fish such as tuna, swordfish, Chilean sea bass and halibut contain toxic amounts of mercury in the muscles. Chilean sea bass (Patagonian toothfish) is very high in fat, too.

About ten years ago I met a young man with a degenerative brain disease, and was interested in the fact that he (working on a fishing boat) had been eating almost a pound of salmon per day for several years. There is now enough information regarding the neurotoxic effects of fish oil to justify avoidance of the fatty fish.“-Ray Peat

“Strauss Israel of Israel is voluntarily recalling the following Elite branded products: Elite Chocolate, Cakes, Wafers, Energy Grain Snacks, Energy Chocolate Rice Cakes, Chewing Gum and Toffee Candies, including all product codes currently on the US market. This recall does not pertain to all Elite coffee items. The recalled products may potentially be contaminated with Salmonella, an organism that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy persons infected with Salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. In rare circumstances, infection with Salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections (i.e., infected aneurysms), endocarditis and arthritis.“

“04/29/2022 – St. Paul, Minnesota, Fagron Inc. (“Fagron”) is voluntarily recalling two lots of SyrSpend SF Cherry to the hospital, pharmacy, and distributor level out of an abundance of caution. The affected lots are potentially contaminated with Burkholderia gladioli.

Burkholderia gladioli is an opportunistic pathogen most commonly affecting patients with respiratory disease. Patients with compromised immune systems such as those with Cystic Fibrosis are at higher risk. Burkholderia gladioli also can cause complications after transplants.”

“Fagron has already notified its distributors and customers by phone, e-mail, and/or letter and is arranging for return of all recalled products. Hospitals, pharmacies, and distributors that possess affected product should quarantine this material and await further instructions from Fagron or Fagron’s recall coordinator. Please immediately discontinue use or distribution of the recalled product. Consumers should contact their physician or healthcare provider if they have experienced any problems that may be related to taking or using this product.“

“Wayne Farms LLC of Decatur, AL, is recalling 30,285 pounds of a ready-to-eat chicken breast fillet product that may be undercooked, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) announced today.

“The problem was discovered when the firm received a customer complaint that the RTE chicken product appeared to be undercooked,” according to the recall notice.

“FSIS is concerned that some products may be in distributors’ or restaurant freezers or refrigerators. Restaurants are urged not to serve these products. These products should be thrown away or returned to the place of purchase.”

“On June 29, the Food and Drug Administration ordered supplement maker Hardcore Formulations to recall two of its bodybuilding supplements after they were found to be laced with derivatives of anabolic steroids — drugs that can have serious health consequences including liver injury and increased risk of heart attack, stroke, and infertility.

The most dangerous supplements are the ones that claim to increase performance in three broad categories, S. Bryn Austin said at an event organized by the Harvard T. H. Chan School of Public Health. Those categories are: muscle building, weight loss, and sexual performance.

"What we're concerned about is adulteration — where people are deliberately including ingredients that shouldn't be in there," she said.”
