This study states that lowering colon pH is desirable because it facilitates mucous production which inhibits endotoxin crossing into thorax.

Is this true?

I think that an abrupt change in colonic pH is probably one of the main factors in getting "sick." For instance, inoculation with EBV, CMV, or herpesvirus can cause a prodromal period of illness followed by apparent remission. An insult to the gut or overgrowth of anaerobic bacteria can cause one of these abrupt pH shifts, reactivating a latent virus infection and causing illness.

Do you agree that more mucous is more protective? If so, what conditions would promote that?
