Initial releases complete in Colombo, Sri Lanka

There was a program in Colombo / Sri Lanka during which mosquitos were released en masse. The mosquitos were infected with the Wolbachia bacterium, and officially this served to tackle dengue fever. The program was completed in April 2021. Sri Lanka now faces a huge increase in dengue fever.

Sri Lanka: Elevated dengue fever activity reported nationwide through May

Health authorities have reported elevated dengue fever activity nationwide in Sri Lanka, with more than 33,000 suspected cases reported Jan. 1-May 14. This is 1.7 times higher than the 19,908 cases reported over a similar period in 2022.

Sri Lanka reported roughly 76,467 dengue fever cases nationwide in 2022, 36,120 cases in 2021, and 31,162 cases in 2020.
