- Significant Amounts of Functional Collagen Peptides Can Be Incorporated in the Diet While Maintaining Indispensable Amino Acid Balance

According to the surveys used by them, the food choices yield an amino acid profile that's concentrated in the indispensable ones. With a profile like this, it would be fine to decrease the daily protein intake below the minimum recommended because they would still hit amino acid targets. Yet, not only the profile is rich in indispensable amino acids, but the protein consumption is in excess of what they deem necessary. What makes collagen an incomplete protein is present beyond needs in people's diets, making it possible to replace a portion of the protein with it without negatively affecting quality.

We knows that there is an amino acid that becomes limiting first. In the case of collagen, it's tryptophan that's suspected for being devoid of it. However and as they mentioned, when it's made part of the diet, the sulfur-containing amino acids may be the limiting ones because we need them in larger amounts in comparison to tryptophan, which is easy to get enough of.

The gurus decided to manipulate how much collagen can substitute other proteins up until the limiting amino acid continues providing the minimum needed. Since they started from a fixed amount of protein (average of what people eat), you can expect the substitution to stop when other sources are providing protein close to the RDA.

I remember Franklin suggesting collagen as a third to half of protein intake, which is precisely the range that they found to be advisable. Considering that this is based on a pattern for essential protein intake, when the protein consumption exceeds basic needs, the desirable pattern starts to change towards one that tolerates extra collagen without being detrimental to protein quality, making the third but also to half 'high quality' depending on the degree of gluttony.

If there's an optimal amount to include in the diet, it should probably be regulated by agencies, similar to drugs, for example.

Is everyone OK with the fact collagen is hydrolyzed? It seemed like the sort of process that could cause issues, but that is just a gut(!) feel
