***Obligatory Tinfoil Hat Warning***

I've read a few articles claiming that the U.S. food supply has been contaminated with radioactive fallout from the Fukishima meltdown. According to these articles, all dairy products have been hit hardest and are unsafe. Here are some links:
http://geigercounter.com/fukushima-nuclear-california-dairy-products/

http://www.naturalnews.com/039923_fukushima_radiation_hypothyroidism.html
http://thesop.org/story/20130514/fa...japan-nuclear-disaster-still-haunting-us.html

Now I realize some of these sources are questionable but I still think this issue deserves some attention.
Consider the following article which refers to a study which shows that the Northwest infant mortality rate increased 35-40% in the 6 weeks after the meltdown, even after controlling for variables.

I don't want to be insensitive. The IMR, however, is a well known and reliable indicator of a population's susceptibility to disease. This means that there was, at one point in time, a significant radioactive fallout.

Should us west coast peaters be worried? All good milk where I'm from is sourced in norcal, and I gotta say I've been feeling a little "off" lately (inb4 paranoid conspiracy theorist jokes), like cognitive issues, brain fog, insomnia, anxiety etc. I think a good place to start would be determining the half-lives of particles like Iodine-131 and cesium-137. I've yet to get a definitive answer on this; I've heard 8days and 30 years. Worst case scenario i'm willing to go full neckbeard and find myself a Geiger counter

Oh, oh. More radioactive fallout incoming, must be serious if the Japanese government admits it.

"This contaminated groundwater has breached an underground barrier, is rising toward the surface and is exceeding legal limits of radioactive discharge, Shinji Kinjo, head of a Nuclear Regulatory Authority (NRA) task force, told Reuters."

Yeh I have been watching this. Definitely NOT GOOD. Also notice how we just raised acceptable limits on radiation.

Definitely a good time to have a fast metabolism. I think it was Ray Peat that said the people out in the country with fast metabolisms did better then the city people when Chernobyl happened.

Funny how just when there is a rise in radiation contamination, suddenly we can safely take a lot more of it. Hmm... That's convenient.

Here is a link for a map that shows real time levels of radiation reported around the US. There are maps for other countries, too. http://radiationnetwork.com/ If you have a Geiger counter, I think you can be a contributor.

Thanks, this is pretty much exactly what I was looking for. Assuming the website is constistently updated and reliable, it would appear the west coast didn't incur much lasting surface radiation from fallout. There still the possibility that radiation seeped into the earth and found it's way into the water supply, so I will continue to use distilled water from the east coast. I was doing that anyways to avoid fluoride.

I am still curious as too Peat's thoughts on this meltdown. He lives in Oregon, so i'd think it would be a pretty relevant issue for the man. I'm sure he's heard something of it.

In the RP email section someone asked Peat about the effects on Pacific Ocean seafood. Of course it isn't good. Right now, isn't he living in Mexico?

Yeah, I'm staying far away from Pacific seafood. Radiation is reason enough for me, but I won't miss the mercury/PCB's either. As far as dairy goes-I found a local dairy (Fresno CA), that had their raw milk tested within a month of the meltdown. They checked 15 kinds of radioactive isotopes, and none were detected. However, their test didn't include hot particles like plutonium and americium, which are known to be highly mobile and carcinogenic. But maybe I'm being kind of a tightwad at this point, and will just shut up and drink my milk. Results posted below.

That was good they had it tested. It does seem impossible to be completely sure of avoiding radiation these days. I guess you just have to do the best you can, like avoiding fish from the Pacific Ocean.

I know. To me it just seems so nuts to play around with nuclear power when just this disaster has taken out a large part of the Pacific Ocean as a source of food. Just that one facet of the destruction it has caused so far should be enough to tell people it's crazy to use it!

Thanks gretchen, I've been looking for a radiation-specific supplement other than iodine, which Peat claims suppresses thyroid. There doesn't seem to be much out there, so this is a GREAT find. I'm gonna spend some time looking through the ingredients and reading up on the active compounds. This "violet flame", on the other hand, might be just a bit too, err... holistic for my taste. But hey, who am I to judge. Now where did I hide that extra tinfoil...

Swandattur- I've actually been a strong advocate for nuclear energy most my adult life. I'm definitely having second thoughts now, but up until fukishima the risks of nuclear proved to be small compared to combustion, as air pollution kills about 2 million p/year globally. I'm still waiting to see how this thing plays out. Your right though, this is just one of hundreds of plants. And I mean, if the Japanese can't handle a meltdown, who on earth can?

And after considering that the lab results i posted were from april 2011 and that there has been 2 years of supposedly bio-accumulating leakage since, I think further testing is in order.

The Russians?

I've read that one of the reasons Fukishima is as bad as it is may be because it happened in Japan. Their whole culture of saving face may be a big contributor as to why this has gotten so far out of control.
