"We are proposing a rule to revoke a health claim for soy protein and heart disease," said a statement from Susan Mayne, director of the FDA Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition. "For the first time, we have considered it necessary to propose a rule to revoke a health claim because numerous studies published since the claim was authorized in 1999 have presented inconsistent findings on the relationship between soy protein and heart disease."

“But we've since learned that not every way of lowering cholesterol has benefits, and some things that do lower cholesterol actually have shown harm, (and) what we know is that there was never any clinical trials ever that showed eating more soy improves heart health," said Dr. Karol Watson, a cardiologist and director of the UCLA Women's Cardiovascular Health Center.”

Great find @Mito and great news.

Edit: wish this had happened a few years ago. Would have saved me some intense arguing with my vegetarian friends loving soy for all its “benefits”.

Since she is talking in plural (more than just soy) it's almost like she is trying to blow the whistle on statins but doesnt quite have the courage to really do so. Or I am just wishful thinking

Statins do have "benefits", but other drugs that reduce cholesterol are problematic. Lest you read too much into it, this is completely conventional wisdom.

The discrepancy is that these products will no longer be able to have the FDA-approved endorsement that suggests this protein promotes a healthy heart. This will probably be replaced with a small asterisk on products which contain the same message, saying these statements are not FDA approved. The weird corollary is that vitamins and minerals (not FDA-approved) already contain such an asterisk, when greater scientific studies are put in place to support them. The underlying, tertiary point makes one question the value of the FDA in general.

I think this site has shown over and over that conventional wisdom, especially in the medical industry, cannot be trusted and often we are better off doing the opposite.

Ray sums it up quite nicely as usual.

Go to the vegan woman who runs the local natural food store if you want to see the effects of soy on health and aging. Jesus.

lol, but that could be a self-selection issue as vegans tend to be less judgemental about how others look and less caring about how they look.
