my mom has been experiencing facial nerve pain on and off for over a year. she's been to multiple doctors and specialists who only give her anti-convulsion medicine and then continue to tell her to simply take more when it doesn't work well. the medicine does provide enough relief to be able to function throughout the day otherwise it can be pretty debilitating. she's been told it might be trigeminal neuralgia. she thinks it might be linked to her HSV-1. any thoughts on treatment if it is trigeminal neuralgia? any similar experiences out there?

Has she checked her thyroid? Also, postural issues can eventually replicate those symptoms. Has she had a stiff upper body for any length - neck (front and back) and/or shoulders? Has a chirropractor looked at the C2-C3 area? Finally, digestive and gallbladder issues could be at play as well. Does she experience constipation?

You can google photobiomodulation for trigeminal neuralgia, this is low level laser therapy. Red and infrared cold laser. It will stop the pain!!! I had this issue and found a chiropractor that has the LLLT and was so impressed with it I bought a class 3b cold laser. Coldlasers.org. It is beneficial for many problems in the body and you can use it for animals also.

I have had moderately severe and chronic nerve pain from various causes and all of them have been improved massively and almost eliminated by consistent exposure to ultraviolet light.

I haven’t figured out the exact dose threshold yet, but its close to an average sub-erythremia beginner sun bed dose, or 3 minutes per side sunbathing at solar noon in June at 32 degrees North.
In winter I have to bask under UV lamps for about ten minutes a couple days a week or I get all kinds of wierd nerve inflammation. I use red light similarly year-around.

thanks for all this insight. i'll have her look into cold lasers, light therapy, and the Chiropractor checking C2-C3. i don't have answers to the other questions but these suggestions are helpful enough. thanks!
