Enhancement of Lethal Action of Endotoxin in Mice by Triiodothyronine
https://docs.google.com/file/d/0B1wyy-g ... sp=sharing

Triiodothyronine enhances the lethal action of endotoxin in mice. It is postulated that this enhancement is associated with anoxia, caused by vasoconstriction and subsequent hypotension that is induced by the endotoxin; and the increased demand for oxygen that is produced by triiodothyronine.

So starch/fiber consumption is incompatible with a higher metabolism. That's interesting.

Only starch causes endotoxin?

Could this be due to an artificially high dose of T3 or increased energy requirement issues, which wouldn't necessarily arise if T3 rose naturally as part of a healthy metabolism?

So artificial T3 supplementation increases endotoxin damage?

I would imagine that natural T3 would naturally dial itself back in the presence of endotoxin. Sugar may be protective against endotoxin, but this study doesn't cover that.

It says cortisol increases to protect against the endotoxin. I wonder if that is why a lot of us are getting more stomach fat?

A lot of people have issues with endotoxin caused by the tight junctions in the GI tract being compromised. When the gut is sound endotoxin is less of an issue and more so a fact of life. You can think of it like a leaky copper water pipe. When the water pipe is intact the water goes out were it is supposed to, when it is leaky some goes out where it is supposed to and some leaks to the outside and corrodes it and over time the leak becomes worse and worse usually causing structural damage to the house the pipe is in. Cortisol protects the organism temporarily but chronically one aspect a larger abdomen.

During an intravenous endotoxin challenge T3 and the other thyroid hormones drop in the blood. At first in the literature it wasn't clear if this was because the metabolism was increasing due to the challenge or because of an inhibitory effect, later it was found that it was indeed and inhibatory effect on the thyroid secreting the hormones.

The question still remains though, is this inhibitory effect a reaction to the endotoxin, or is endotoxin having a direct effect on the thyroid gland. The literature is mixed.

One more reason why it is important to solve as many problems as possible with nutrition before jumping on the thyroid supplement express to endotoxin city.
