Serotonin modulates insect hemocyte phagocytosis via two different serotonin receptors

The 5-HT1B-null Drosophila melanogaster mutants showed higher mortality than controls when infected with bacteria, due to their decreased phagocytotic ability.

Insects and mammals are separated by about 500 million years of evolution, and so these findings suggest that serotonin is an ancient signaling molecule that can control the immune system across the animal kingdom.
