Eating Fat For Extra Calories Is Ok, Eating Sugar For Extra Calories Is Not

This is about the mentality of bodybuilding/weightlifting forums online. For people having a hard time gaining weight they're often recommended to smother their meals in olive oil, extra sour cream on your potatoes and even going to the absurdity of olive oil shots. Basically adding fat with no nutrients into your meals wherever possible. And most of them think this advice is a-ok.

But if you suggest eating extra sugar for calories from say from soft drinks or whatever, they freak out.

Anybody got ideas as to why this is? What's the mentality behind this apart from "extra fat ok, extra sugar bad bcuz"?

Because they are just like everyone else who doesn't realize what sugar really is, an important molecule for the human organism. They can never really tell you why sugar is bad. They always say glycation, diabetes and blood sugar but they don't realize that the sugar that ends up in your bloodstream from "white" sugar is the same as the sugar from a mango, a potato, milk and even from a piece of steak that they love. Sugar is sugar. They love fat because they believe it helps to make hormones but that isn't fully true because the steroid hormones are made form cholesterol, not fat, and cholesterol can be made from any macronutrient. The organism still makes hormones on a low fat diet. I would never take advice from people in the bodybuilding world unless I was interested in it. BB is about aesthetics, not health. Yes aesthetics can be a part of health but BB do unhealthy things to get aesthetic.

Great post. Bodybuilders have a tendency to stink, probably due to high ammonia due to their protein intakes. Many use and abuse drugs (stimulants like caffeine and clenbuterol for example), and they tend eliminate fat as the primary macronutrient (even with peanut butter and fish oil), so they probably have some health advantages there. Starch with low fat may still win out over sugar with high fat in the long-term, particularly sugar with a large PUFA composition for their fats.
