I. If you want to focus on the content in a book or on your laptop or anything else cognitively engaging, narrow your field of vision.

II. If you want to relax or in other words, get into a parasympathetic state, widen your field of vision.

Do you think this narrowing and widening has more to do with a mental exercise, or the physical movement of your eyes and facial muscles?

Great question! It's almost exclusively a musculature thing. Mind follows body. You should become aware of and see more peripheral objects than just the objects in front of you.
