No, not mutually exclusive. How did you arrive at this query? Earth is the only place where evolution is going on - the next jump for humans is this :
humanity ----- > Divinity. A more complete chart will show this evolutionary spiral :
mineral kingdom ----- > vegetable kingdom ------ > animal kingdom ------ > human domain ---- > Divinity

It is taught by the spiritual masters that there is no place in the universe that has this progressive evolution in consciousness going on. The earth is unique is this respect. Those Jivas/Jeevas who dwell on other planes/dimensions/stars whatever will have to come down to earth, then don the robe of human physicality if they want to evolve. The Law of Karma and rebirth applies to all, without exception. Those celestial beings, demi-gods, etc who get cursed will have no choice but to take human birth. As the famous occultist H.P. Blavatsky puts it : The path winds UPHILL all the way. Look at the word 'heart' - notice that it contains the same letters that spell 'earth'.
