Do you only need 500 calories in carbs to stave off the stress response?

Ray Peat talks about if you low on liver glycogen, you start creating stress hormones. At rest your body is burning about 80% fat and less than 20% glucose. So let's say you're resting all day, that would equal about 500 calories of glucose to keep your liver glycogen up (based on a 2,500 caloric intake).

Does this make sense?

Yes and no.

The best way to calm the stress response- not bandaid it (ie: extra salt; extra sugar or carbs) but allow your metabolism to be optimal- is to balance your blood sugar.

So a meal with 40/30/30 or 50/20/20 is the best way.
