what copper sources did you end up with ?
None, copper has lower RDI, it's easier to meet requirements for copper than zinc, so I really need to find better zinc sources.

Just supplement the zinc. Unlike copper (Copper(III)-Copper(I) difference), it doesn't matter whether it's synthetic or not.

so copper from natural sources are the only good copper?

does copper gluconate or chelate make sense to get levels up for a few weeks?

good copper sources besides liver and oysters?

Yeah, Just tell them to him then.
The problem with supplementing zinc is most of them have way too high doses, if you can't get enough through diet for whatever reason, a normal dose supplement is fine of course.
