Unlike many yogurts, kefir contains a variety of yeasts as well as bacteria, doesn't it? Just speculating, but maybe some relatively benign yeasts are better at displacing pathogenic yeasts than bacteria are? Or maybe the complexity of the kefir ecology makes it more stable and more able to take on the worsers (ie the worser baddies).

I should have probably been more specific because when I mentioned probiotic pills and food I was including kefir as well. I used to make my own kefir water and I don't recall feeling ill from drinking it the way I did from heavily laden lactic acid bacteria substances. For most of the time I was experimenting with probiotics in their various forms I was starving on the Paleo plan so it's easy to see how additional lactic acid could become a huge problem when my own cells were already producing too much.
