...positively HAVE to be cooked in order to reap *any* benefits from them? I do eat raw carrots but I also enjoy them cooked (steamed, stove top/sauteed, in soups...).

Who said that?
Everything I read/hear w/r/t RP and carrots seems to be implying that they are to be eaten raw (salad, eating a raw carrot...). Others like @haidut have also talked about this in podcasts. One in particular I remember him saying that raw carrots are one food that it's ok if it's not chewed exceptionally well b/c the it helps to have a little bit of surface area on the raw carrot as it makes its way through the digestive system. I can't find anything that elaborates on the benefits, if there are any, of cooked/steamed/boiled compared to prepared or what kinds of changes they go through that could take away from the advantages of them being consumed raw.
