The charts in Mckinlay & Mckinlay's 1977 article are truly astonishing. They show that mortality from most infectious diseases had been reduced to practically zero *decades* before antibiotics and vaccines were introduced! The reductions in mortality were due to improved nutrition and sanitation, and not to medical "cures".

This is an important issue, and deserves to be discussed in a separate thread.
