Cortisone injection

I have been dealing with pain in my right shoulder for 6 weeks now and it is not getting any better after being formally diagnosed with an ac sprain and impingement syndrome.
I have been trying to use aspirin and stretch but it hasn’t been able to alleviate the pain. The dr has reccomended I get a cortisone injection at the site to help it subside. Should this be something that is absolutely avoided or is it ok to pursue to help me fix it?

The pain isn’t necessarily intolerable, but I am desperate to get it to go away.

Yes it should be avoided. It dissolves cartilage and is really horrible. Look up Mr Physio English YouTube channel. There are exercises you can do that will make it better. Sometimes trigger point work. Avoid cortisone. And ice also isn’t helpful.

Track down a competent chiropractor/functional movement rehab specialist and get them to help you. It will make a world of difference. Forget about the cortisone shot.

Also look into Atlas Orthogonal adjustment with a chiropractor who is certified to do this form of adjustment using equipment rather than neck cracking adjustment,

Thanks for the feedback. Is there any danger outside of the dissolving of cartilage that exists with a one time injection?

I’ve gone to the chiropractor and I’m not sure I have a lot of hope that he is going to be able to get the pain all the way away. I’ve had this for a long time and no amount of rest seems to be helping.

Have you tried rubbing topical progesterone at the site of the injury? This sometimes helps.

I found that topical progesterone and eccentric exercises are very helpful and beneficial along with trigger point therapy for almost every joint muscle or tendon problem.

@Hans do have any thoughts you wouldn’t mind sharing?
How did you get the injury? Is it possible that you have ankle, knee or hip tightness/instability/impingement as well? If so, then the shoulder injury could be due to long-term compensation for another issue and direct work on the injured site won't help much.

I don’t think so as I got the injury from doing a behind the neck press. Do you have any thoughts on the effects of the cortisone shot or if there could be systemic/hormonal effects front taking it?

I'd also not recommend getting a cortisone shot as it will definitely not solve the issue. It might help against inflammation, but it will not heal the injury or correct whatever might be wrong there.

Agreed, but what I might want to is get the injection and then continue with the chiropractor to help get the inflammation down so I can really work with it and get back to normal. I’ve taken plenty of aspirin and I can’t seem to get it to alleviate at all over the past 8 months. But you don’t think the cortisone injection would have any negative effect on hormones? Since it isn’t a pill or long term therapy?

Cortisone may skew thyroid lab work as it will push your TSH higher than normal but will return to normal levels a few weeks later after stopping the steroid. That's if you are on thyroid meds. It makes you more hypothyroid.

Look at having atlas orthogonal adjustment done rather than the neck cracking adjustment. Select a chiropractor who is certified to do that type of adjustment using the equipment to do it.

Cortisol is highly catabolic so I won't use it even temporarily to reduce inflammation. How much progesterone have you applied to that area?

just a couple mg drops to cover the area, is there a certain amount I should shoot for? I’m very conflicted as I don’t want to but I’ve been out of being able to workout hard for 8 weeks now and can’t play golf either, and it doesn’t seem like the rest is doing anything to improve it.

But in your mind is even the injection going to have long standing systemic effects? I don’t want to do it but am getting desperate for a fix.

I have been diagnosed by an orthopedic and it is not a serious tear of any sort. Just and overuse injury.
