people lose lean muscle mass as they age. And they may have higher or lower thyroid levels, but these don't seem to affect the loss of lean muscle mass.

The most interesting part of this is that Italians had lower lean muscle mass as they age AND lower basal metabolism rate.

Peat says that higher BMR as you age will maintain your immune system and your lean muscle mass, so this is reinforcement of what he has claimed.

It doesn't however say much for levels of thyroid correlating with lean muscle mass. That isn't confirmed or refuted by this study. Levels of thyroid that were determined by their testing did NOT correlate. However, that doesn't mean that "real" thyroid levels don't correlate. Or that some people can't have a high BMR while not having a super high thyroid rate.
