Hi,

I have signs of copper deficiency (I am 28 years old and I have quite a lot of gray hair and I have more and more white hair on my beard). I am wondering is it safe to supplement copper in the form of copper (II) sulfate?

The chemical formula is:
CuSO4·5H2O
The chemical name is: pentahydrate of copper (II) sulfate (blue crystals)

As pentahydrate of copper (II) sulfate contains 25% of copper, I am planing to take 10 mg of this substance with my main meal. That will provide me with 2,5 mg of extra copper.

I haven't tried copper sulfate but earlier in the year I concluded that copper glycinate might be a good form of copper. The worst side effect I ever got from it was brief nausea when I took 4mg single dose (not always).

Gray hair is associated with nutrient deficiency, usually copper. Low copper and excess iron are said to be related. I think an iron blood test is useful information, especially if its too high or too low (both extremes seem associated with gray hair).

Thanks jyb for your inputs.

First day I took 13mg of copper sulfate, next day (today) 23mg. No nausea or anything.

Anyone think it would be safe to sprinkle some copper sulphate in my bath?
