An interesting factoid i'll share that is perhaps relevant .. historically in the US, different groups had different building technologies. There is commentary in Ben Franklins journals about the interactions he had with pennsylvania german settlers who made use of wood stoves which were unique in their construction. They had chimneys like all stoves but they supplied fresh air via a pipe to the stove to minimize drafting through the house from the draw of the flue. This made the houses, much to to the discomfort of Ben Franklin, accumulate gas and humidity from the inhabitants which undoubtedly included high concentrations of co2. I'm willing to bet ambient moisture in the air also influences processes in the lungs of people suffering respiratory issues like covid.
